FAQ

Quick answers

Who pays CBAM — us or the EU buyer?

The EU importer buys and surrenders CBAM certificates. But the cost is based on your product's emissions, so your data directly affects your price competitiveness.

What if we don't share any data?

Your buyer falls back on EU default values, which are set conservatively and usually cost them more.

Do our emissions need verifying?

Yes — in the definitive phase, actual emissions must be verified by an accredited verifier. We get your data and evidence ready for that.

Which products does CBAM cover?

Iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen and electricity, plus some downstream products such as screws, bolts and other steel or aluminium articles. Coverage is set by the product's CN code, which we check for you.

Is there a minimum volume?

Yes. EU importers bringing in 50 tonnes or less a year of covered goods are exempt, but the threshold does not apply to electricity or hydrogen. Many of your buyers will be above it.

When are the first CBAM deadlines?

The definitive phase began on 1 January 2026. CBAM certificates go on sale from 1 February 2027, and the first annual declaration, covering 2026 imports, is due by 30 September 2027.

Does India's carbon market reduce CBAM costs?

Possibly in future, but the EU rules for deducting a carbon price paid in India were not final as of mid-2026. We recommend planning your CBAM costs without assuming a deduction.
